"Alex Lucas is a great Jiu Jitsu coach. He’s a black
belt and competitive champion. Not only does he have the skill and the accomplishments to prove it he is also a great communicator. This is what you need if you are trying to learn anything. Alex is able to explain the moves and techniques as well as the theory behind the moves in a clear way that will help you to understand and improve your skills. He also creates a
supportive inclusive environment to learn. Jiu Jitsu is a
challenge. To remain comfortable in uncomfortable situations and to think and react in a productive way under pressure is not easy. When Alex is running a class there is always a atmosphere of friendship and support. You will be in a room surrounded by friends who are working hard to help each other get better. I started Jiu Jitsu at 57 and was a little intimidated. I am now about to turn 64 and have earned a purple belt. I did not
realize how Jiu Jitsu would change my life. I have become healthier and happier, more fit and a little more dangerous to someone who might try to attack me but the best benefits are the great friends I’ve made and my new favorite place, the Jiu Jitsu Academy. I am sad that I will see less of my friend Alex but I look forward to traveling to his new Live Oak Academy and
training with some new friends in a new favorite place. “
-Jake J., Purple Belt, Competitor, Comedian
“ If you're looking to grow your skills and knowledge in
Jiu-Jitsu look no further. Coach Alex is an attentive and seasoned instructor
that will work with you to meet your training/competition goals. His ability to
tailor techniques and feedback to your needs makes him a great teacher to learn from no matter what belt you are. “
-Jocelyn A. White Belt, Competitor, Teacher
“ Having trained from white belt to purple under the instruction of Coach Alex, I can attest to his mastery of the art of jiujitsu and his talent for teaching those concepts and techniques to his students. I was able to follow him in my early days as he broke down basic escapes and passes for the class to learn in a way that was easy to grasp. Under Coach Alex, I went from experiencing Jiu Jitsu as a panicked fight for survival, to a steady endeavor of self-control, and ultimately a fun sport with always something new to learn. Coach Alex keeps classes are well structured, goal oriented and most of all fun plus entertaining. He has a vast library in his head of not just BJJ tactics and strategy, but also competitive experience. He helped me organize my own game plan for competitions I entered and was an invaluable support. But above all these things, more than him being a leader, an expert, a supporter, a friend, Coach Alex is a student of the craft and he makes you feel welcome to follow him as he continues to grow in this special sport. I can’t recommend him enough to practitioners at any level.”
-Tito P., Purple Belt, Art Director
“ I’ve had the privilege of having Alex Lucas as one of my coaches and mentor. He is an excellent instructor, he breaks down intricate moves into simple and manageable steps. He keeps his own skill up to date by continually learning by studying and training with others. His techniques have been rigorously tested in high-level competitions, ensuring that what he teaches is both practical and proven. This real-world application of skills gives students confidence that they are learning techniques that work, not just in theory but in practice. "
-John G., Brown Belt, Software Engineer
“ There are plenty of accomplished jiu jitsu instructors out there, and I’d rank Alex alongside any of them, but what really sets him apart is his generous nature and natural gifts as a teacher. He’s able to draw upon his wealth of knowledge and experience to convey complex concepts and techniques in a way that’s accessible and personalized to the needs of every student, from white belt to black. I can think of no better person to help you start, or continue, your jiu jitsu journey.”
-Justin F., Brown Belt, Competitor, Author
“Coach Alex was a patient and smart teacher, who showed me how important Jiu Jitsu is for me. He will help your kid learn how to be strong, resilient, and teach them some important life lessons. Coach Alex always provided a fun and enjoyable experience in the gym.”
-Luca F., Yellow Belt, High School Junior
“ Alex Lucas was my first, and will always be my best, BJJ instructor. Alex blends his immense skill and knowledge for the art with an amazing ability to teach it. He's able to make the complicated and complex concepts of BJJ applicable and digestible to any practitioner, at any level. The best part of Alex's curriculum is rolling with him. I'm always in awe of Alex's ability to throttle his game to right where you need him to be; he doesn't smash you like other black belts would, but also doesn't let you win easily. He finds the perfect zone to match you at your skill level, and will stay one slight step ahead of you so he presents a challenge that you can see and overcome via adaption of a new skill or level of confidence. Alex can teach and instruct DURING a roll, just as well as he can outside of it. During the chaos of a roll, Alex will tell me what exact adjustments to make to beat what he's giving me, even if I'm aggressively submitting him. I always come away from a roll with Alex feeling challenged, improved, and ready/able to apply what I learned against someone else immediately. Alex also has a passion for developing his students' games in a long term context. He will approach you often with broad & specific ideas like things you should try to master, tricks to add to your tool belt, or theory to chew on off the mat. Alex is a constantly available resource; whether that means always answering questions via phone/text, constantly observing and “ thinking on his students' games, or staying on top of his own skills to make sure he's on the cutting edge of the art.
Above all else, Alex is a joy to work with. His classes are the perfect blend of fun, urgent, and intellectual. You always know you're getting your time & money's worth with Alex and you'll always leave a better BJJ practitioner. "
